01Your current organic performance

Average monthly organic sessions from search engines.

The monthly sessions you aim to reach at the end of the ramp.

Traffic increases linearly to your target, then stays flat.

Share of organic sessions that produce a lead or signup.

02Your conversion economics

Share of leads or signups that become paying customers.

Revenue per closed deal, counted once. Do not enter recurring monthly revenue.

Leave blank for revenue-based return. Enter 0 for a real zero margin.

Total proposed monthly spend: agency, content, tools and internal resources.

+Advanced SEO inputsRefine your assumptions

Optional measured inputs override the corresponding entered conversion rates. Costs and sales-cycle assumptions affect your return and payback.

Overrides visitor conversion: current leads ÷ current sessions.

Overrides close rate: current new customers ÷ current leads (measured or estimated).

Subtracted from the proposed total spend. Enter 0 to count the full budget.

01 / Follow the value

How Does the SEO ROI Calculator Work?

Enter your current organic performance, conversion rates and investment. The calculator follows the additional traffic through your business model, rather than treating every organic visitor as new revenue.

  1. 01

    Model additional traffic

Subtract current sessions from your target. Apply a linear ramp so the full target does not appear in month 1.

  2. 02

    Apply your conversion funnel

For B2B and SaaS, convert visitors to leads or signups, then to customers. Ecommerce uses a visitor-to-order rate directly.

  3. 03

Account for time and customer value

Apply any sales-cycle delay. Count B2B deals and orders once; in SaaS, add monthly subscription cohorts and apply churn.

  4. 04

    Calculate return after costs

Apply your gross margin where supplied. Deduct incremental recurring SEO spend and any one-time setup cost.

  5. 05

    Compare ROI, payback and scenarios

Divide net return by investment. Compare cumulative cost recovery and three explicit traffic-uplift scenarios.

02 / Transparent by design

SEO ROI Formula

SEO ROI =
Additional SEO-generated gross profit − Incremental SEO investment
Incremental SEO investment
× 100

Gross profit = additional revenue × gross margin. This accounts for delivery costs before SEO spend; it is not full net business profit.

Incremental investment = (proposed monthly SEO spend − existing monthly SEO cost) × 12 + setup cost.

Revenue-only mode: leave gross margin blank to compare revenue less SEO cost. The result is labeled revenue-based return. A zero investment makes percentage ROI undefined.

All 12-month returns use the ramped monthly forecast. The calculator does not multiply the full target month by 12 or include existing organic revenue in the return.

03 / Model the uncertainty

Why Is SEO ROI Difficult to Measure?

A forecast can make the assumptions visible. It cannot remove the uncertainty around when rankings, demand and buyer behavior will change.

SEO builds over time

Rankings and useful content do not produce their full modeled return immediately.

Buyers cross channels

A person may discover you through search, return through paid media and close after a referral.

Traffic has different intent

A research session, a qualified lead and a paying customer carry different commercial value.

Attribution is imperfect

Analytics and CRM systems may assign credit differently. Compare modeled scenarios with actual lead and revenue records.

Traffic is the entry point

Traffic Isn't the Business Case. Pipeline Is.

Visitors become leads when they take action. Leads become qualified opportunities when sales confirms fit and intent. Pipeline becomes revenue when a deal closes. Traffic alone skips the work between discovery and a customer.

01Traffic
02Leads
03Opportunities
04Pipeline
05Revenue

This tool models leads and closed customers. Opportunity qualification and monetary pipeline are not separately estimated without those extra inputs.

04 / Beyond a single conversion

How to Calculate SEO ROI for a B2B Company

Start with organic sessions, then trace lead conversion, qualification, close rate and deal value. Include your sales cycle, gross margin and the full cost of SEO.

The calculator uses a combined lead-to-customer rate. If your team tracks MQLs and SQLs, multiply those stage conversion rates together to arrive at the combined close rate, rather than treating every lead as qualified pipeline.

Use a one-time revenue value per closed deal here. For ongoing monthly subscription revenue, use SaaS mode instead.

05 / Revenue that recurs

How to Calculate SEO ROI for SaaS Companies

Use trial or demo conversion, conversion to paid, monthly subscription value, churn and gross margin. Each month adds a new customer cohort while earlier additional customers can continue to generate revenue.

Enter monthly recurring revenue per account, not annual contract value or lifetime value. If your input is annual contract value, divide it by 12 before entering it. The tool counts revenue only within each modeled month and applies the churn you enter.

Annual upfront billing, expansion revenue and changes in pricing are outside this model. Use actual billing and retention data when evaluating a real investment.

06 / A mix, not a rivalry

SEO ROI vs Paid Search ROI

Compare the same horizon, delivery costs and conversion assumptions. Neither channel automatically produces the better business case.

SEO

A slower ramp. Assets to maintain.

Investment goes into content, technical health and authority. Useful assets can keep creating visibility, but continued results depend on maintenance, competition and demand.

Paid search

Traffic sooner. Ongoing media spend.

Campaigns can acquire traffic as soon as they run, with more direct short-term attribution. Traffic depends on media spending, auction economics and conversion performance.

07 / The assumptions outside the form

What Can Change Your SEO ROI?

Your result is only as useful as the assumptions behind it. Review these before treating a traffic target as an achievable plan.

01

Search demand & intent

A traffic target needs enough relevant demand, including people with a reason to buy.

02

Competition & authority

Ranking difficulty and your current authority affect which opportunities are realistic.

03

Content & technical health

Useful content, crawlability, performance and implementation all influence execution.

04

Search result changes

SERP features and AI answers can change how much visibility becomes a website visit.

05

Conversion & sales

Positioning, qualification, follow-up and close rate determine what the traffic produces.

06

Value & delivery economics

Pricing, deal size, gross margin, retention and churn change the value of each customer.

08 / Connect the whole system

Your SEO ROI Is Only as Good as Your Growth System

SEO can create visibility. Your website, positioning, content, conversion paths and sales process determine how much of that organic demand becomes pipeline.

A few useful answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SEO ROI?

SEO ROI measures the return attributed to search engine optimization relative to its cost. This calculator models additional business from traffic growth, rather than crediting all existing organic revenue to a new investment.

How do you calculate SEO ROI?

Subtract incremental SEO investment from additional SEO-generated gross profit, divide by that investment and multiply by 100. If gross margin is omitted, this tool clearly labels the result as revenue-based return instead.

What is a good SEO ROI?

There is no universal benchmark. Compare the same time horizon, margin basis, risk and acquisition economics across your alternatives. A strong modeled percentage still depends on achieving the assumptions behind it.

How long does SEO take to generate ROI?

Timing depends on your starting position, competition, implementation, conversion economics and sales cycle. Use the ramp-up and sales-cycle inputs to explore timing; they are assumptions, not a promise of when SEO will work.

Does SEO ROI differ for B2B companies?

Yes. B2B typically needs a visitor-to-lead rate, a lead-to-customer rate and a sales-cycle delay. A lead is not revenue, so this calculator carries the funnel through to new paying customers.

How do I calculate SEO ROI for SaaS?

Choose SaaS and enter monthly revenue per customer, signup or demo conversion, paid conversion, gross margin and monthly churn. The model retains additional customer cohorts month by month and counts subscription revenue only in the months modeled, rather than booking lifetime value upfront.

Should I use revenue or profit to calculate SEO ROI?

A gross-profit basis accounts for delivery costs through your gross margin. It is more informative than revenue alone, although it is still not full net business profit. Leave margin blank only if you want a clearly labeled revenue-based comparison.

What inputs do I need to calculate SEO ROI?

Current and target organic sessions, a ramp period, conversion rates, customer or order value and SEO investment. Gross margin is optional. Measured leads and customers, existing SEO cost, setup cost, sales cycle, churn and paid CPC can refine the scenario.

Can SEO ROI be predicted accurately?

A calculator can make assumptions and arithmetic transparent; it cannot predict rankings, search demand or buyer behavior. Validate assumptions with analytics, CRM data and search research, then compare actual results with the scenario over time.

How is SEO ROI different from PPC ROI?

Paid search includes ongoing media cost and can acquire traffic immediately once campaigns run. SEO usually involves a slower ramp and continuing work on content, technical health and authority. Compare both over a consistent period and on the same revenue or margin basis.

Does the calculator guarantee SEO results?

No. It is a free, browser-based mathematical scenario tool. It does not use AI to invent forecasts, connect to your analytics, verify market demand or guarantee traffic, customers or revenue.
